POSITION TITLE:        Mental Health Counselor

RESPONSIBLE TO:     Behavioral Health Director/Clinic Manager

FLSA STATUS:            Non-Exempt

Purpose of Position:  The Mental Health Counselor functions as an interdependent member of the VFHC team, providing counseling services to children, adolescents and adult patients.  The position contributes to fulfilling the organization’s mission and strategic initiatives by working in diverse areas aiding in treatment of disorders that are behavioral, psychological or attitude based; including patients with learning or behavior problems.  This position will utilize sound clinical decision making based on observation, assessment, diagnosis, planning, evaluation, and evidence-based practice. Patient / client assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic measures will be carried out in close association and collaboration with the clinic physician, PA/FNP, psychiatric practitioner and/or other care agencies in the community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Master’s degree in psychology or another human service field.

2.    Licensed in Idaho and/or Oregon, as needed, as a LCSW, LMSW, LPC, or LCPC.

3.    One-year work experience, preferably in a medical office setting with children and/or adolescents.

4.    Preferably bilingual – English/Spanish.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide counseling, rehabilitation, and support services to children and adolescents.
  2. Appropriately screen, evaluate, and assess clients in both a therapeutic and/or medical setting.
  3. Diagnose psychological, behavioral and emotional disorders as listed in the DSM-5.
  4. Utilize evidenced-based treatment strategies based on treatment regime most appropriate for client (such as CBT, DBT, etc.).
  5. Develop and implement treatment plans with measurable goals for clients and/or families.
  6. Regularly evaluate treatment plans, making changes as needed.
  7. Work within family units to improve client outcomes and create an environment of healing.
  8. Work with patients in drug rehabilitation process.
  9. Complete and maintain timely records and reports in an integrated electronic health record regarding client’s progress, services provided, and other clinical information.
  10. Work within a team-based care model including collaborating with outside community resources/agencies.
  11.  Adhere to company policies and professional code of ethics.
  12. Assist with meeting quality measures by completing tasks related to VFHC initiatives.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: 

1.    Should have a strong desire to help others.

  1. Maintain confidentiality about sensitive issues related to the patients/clients.
  2. Good knowledge of difficult social, cultural, and educational environments. 
  1. Have specialized knowledge in the area of children and adolescent mental health as well as family systems.
  2. Abreast of latest developments in counseling.

ABILITIES: 

1.    Understand and interpret policies and regulations.

2.    Examine documents for accuracy and completeness and prepare insurance records in accordance with detailed instructions.

3.    Organize and prioritize tasks effectively.

4.    Read, understand and follow oral written instructions. 

5.    Communicate effectively and clearly.

Physical Requirements:  

1.    Must be able to lift 25 lbs.

2.    Continuous sitting, standing, walking.

3.    Normal manual dexterity.

4.    Correctable vision and hearing.

5.    Must be able to read, write and speak clearly.
