CCHP Telehealth Policy Updates: Medicare

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) provided an updated eligible list of telehealth delivered services for the Medicare program.

The Telehealth Services list was updated on February 13, 2023 and appears to show that services that were temporarily allowed to be provided and covered under Medicare during the Public Health Emergency (PHE) will be available through 2023. Recently, after Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 that extended some of the telehealth PHE waivers in Medicare out to 2024, CCHP and others noted that the eligible services list had a different end date as previous actions related to it have always taken place through CMS administrative actions and not through Congress. While CMS has taken some action, the timing has not exactly lined up with Congress’ end date of December 31, 2024.  However, by allowing the services to be eligible through the end of this year, CMS has the opportunity and time to make any other changes through their regular regulatory process of the Physician Fee Schedule without creating any gaps between policies.
